Hey, Bookworms! Welcome to our February Calendar Girls Books post! In case you don’t know what this is, it is an event that takes place on the first Monday of every month. Each month, a theme is voted on and you pick a book that fits this theme! This event was formerly hosted by, Flavia @FlaviatheBibliophile and Melanie @MNBernard Books. The event is now hosted by Katie @NeverNotReading and Adrienne @DarqueDreameReads. Head over to their blogs to find out more! We’re so excited to be participating in this discussion! This month’s theme is: Black History Month (Favorite Book Written by a Black Author). Let’s get started!
There are SOOO many amazing books written by black authors that we have read and loved!! We actually made a reading guide last year for all of the amazing books we have read by black authors. Check out our reading guide here as all of the books mentioned are honorable mentions for this month’s theme. We also created a reading guide for books written by black authors that are on our TBR, so please check that out here for more book recommendations that are written by or about people of color. It is always good to diversify your worldview, and picking up books that give a different perspective than your own can be a great way to do that!
Now for our pick…
Dear Martin by: Nick Stone!
We read this book early last year and absolutely loved it!! Dear Martin is a quick, beautifully written novel that definitely packs a punch. It follows an African American teenage boy who writes letters to Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. as a way to try to navigate the world as a young black man. This book has such a powerful message as it goes into both the blatant and more discreet racism that people of color still face today in America. We love this book, and definitely think it’s an important read that is worth your time. Definitely check it out if you haven’t already!
Thank you so much for taking the time to read our post! We would love to here some of your favorite books written by black authors in the comments below!
I’m kind of surprised, I thought you guys were going to pick The Hate U Give for sure! I have heard that this is a great comp to that, though. Good choice!

I’ve had that one on my tbr for like, a year, and haven’t gotten around to it. Which, to be honest, is a lot less than a lot of the books on it…

Dawlyn: It’s a pretty quick read! I got through it it one sitting one night, which is rare for me these days.

Dear Martin doesn’t get the credit it deserves but I really love it, too. I’m excited to read Nic Stone’s second book 😊
